How Is Charcoal Made Step By Step?

Charcoal, an essential product for barbecues. It is also used for heating fires and cooking in rural areas in some countries. Charcoal is divided into mechanism charcoal and log charcoal. Mechanism charcoal is made of all kinds of wood chips compressed with binder and then burned. The cost is lower than raw wood charcoal. Mechanized charcoal is not suitable for use as barbecue charcoal. Log charcoal is more expensive than mechanism charcoal. It is healthier than charcoal in terms of barbecue and is more resistant to burning. So, how is charcoal made step by step?

Raw Material Selection

First of all, we need to carefully select the raw materials. Wood is the core of charcoal production, and the quality of charcoal directly affects the quality of the final product. Raw material is the key to making charcoal. Choose dry, unblemished, high hardness hardwood. For example: oak, birch, hickory, etc. are ideal for making high quality charcoal.

Wood Processing

The selected wood is crushed into small pieces by a crusher. The pieces are then placed in a ventilated dry place for drying to remove excess moisture from the wood in preparation for the next step of carbonisation.
High Temperature Carbonisation. The carbonisation process is the core part of charcoal making, by controlling the oxygen supply. The wood is burned in a closed charcoal oven, gradually releasing moisture and volatiles to form charcoal. This process requires controlled time and temperature to ensure quality. This ensures the yield and quality of charcoal. Long time carbonisation and suitable temperature can promote the full release of moisture and volatile substances, thus obtaining charcoal with high quality. We need to keep a close eye on the progress of the charring process to ensure that each yellow sister is handled properly.

Cooling and Storage

After carbonisation, the charcoal needs to be cooled and stored. The charcoal needs to be cooled to prevent further burning and stored in a dry and ventilated place to avoid moisture and mould. The purpose of cooling is to prevent the charcoal from continuing to burn and storage is to ensure that the charcoal is kept in a dry and ventilated environment. This prevents dampness and mould.
